The role of Hormones on Metabolism

Weight Loss ResultsThere have been some remarkable discoveries in recent years on the role that hormones play in the human body. It is now understood that certain hormones trigger fat burning mechanisms within the body and others have a fat storing effect. According to the Australian Better Health Initiative, cholesterol actually plays an important role in the body’s sex hormones. Cholesterol is vital to the function of the brain and the nervous system and is stored there in big quantities by the body and this is fine as opposed to the cholesterol that enters the blood. Certain foods trigger this type of cholesterol absorption in the blood which in turn messes up the hormonal balances that regulate a healthy fat metabolism. Sound confusing? Well it shouldn’t be.

Cholesterol and Hormones

Cholesterol is also vital in the body for the proper absorption of fat therefore the idea is to limit foods which act to increase blood cholesterol or ‘bad cholesterol’. Great you say, find a list of foods that are high in cholesterol, remove them from the diet and watch the fat melt away, right? Well not exactly as there are other factors which affect the hormones that promote fat burning. Recent scientific studies have shown that poor sleep can affect our hormones and metabolism, making us prone to putting on the pounds. A study cited on the U.S. National Library of Chopping VegMedicine called ‘Reductions in circulating anabolic hormones induced by sustained sleep deprivation in rats’, shows some interesting observations regarding the circulation of the anabolic hormones and leptin in particular. The full text can be found at the above link. So, I sleep more and eat less cholesterol high food and now do I get to watch the fat melt away? Not quite yet…

Hormones and Enzymes...

You have to contend with the enzymes that direct the action to a specific part of the body whilst leaving all other hormonal functions intact. This is discussed in an article provided by the UK’s Home Office where:

Thanks to the Freedom of Information Acts in most western countries there are volumes of studies conducted on hormones and their effect on metabolism. Problem is that these studies are rarely written in plain English and trawling through scientific articles isn’t everyones' cup of tea. Some studies conflict with others and the implications are often hidden in the fine print. But help is near!

Fat Burning Tips

Don’t cut fats out altogether. No fat diets or extremely low fat diets are a BIG mistake. Reduce your saturated fat intake but make sure you get enough monounsaturated fats (olive oil) and polyunsaturated fats (fish oil, flaxseed, and nuts). Certain fats are important for healthy skin, cardiovascular function, and even fat loss.
